Maharathis in Central Maharashtra / Vidarbha, Maharathi Sirimata, Alloyed Copper, 4.69g, most likely counterstruck on a coin of Maharathi Talanthati, Obv: Beautifully executed central symbol comprising of a three arched hill topped by a crescent, flanked by two Shrivatsas, two inverted triangle-headed standards and two Swastikas on either side, wavy line below; Brahmi legend Maharathisa Sirimatasa around with traces of undertype visible in lower field, Rev: tree with seven oblong leaves in a railing (not visible) surrounded by small symbols, like Shrivatsas, triangle-headed standards, and Nandipadas. Traces of another tree-in-railing as under type (Unpublished in major publications). Extremely fine for type, exceedingly rare.The Maharathis of Central Maharashtra came into prominence when they apparently exerted their right to strike coins during the turbulent period of Kshatrapa – Satavahana conflict. Thanks to the reconsolidation of political power under Gotamiputa Siri Satakani and Vasithiputa Siri Pulumavi, such insubordinations were successfully quelled.
