Chalukyas of Badami, Gold Varaha- Gadyana, 3.85g, “Lion” type, Obv: Majestic maned Lion standing facing right, with roaring mouth and curved tail, sub and crescent moon above, Rev: Chalukya temple with short Phamsana-style Vimana and four stylized pillars. A half-lotus motif in the centre suggests a Vaishnava affiliation (Mitch# 258 plate specimen). Extremely fine, exceedingly rare. Mitchiner attributes this series of ‘temple’-type Gadyanas to the period of Pulakeshin II but without any evidence.
