Chalukyas of Kalyani / Feudatories, Gold Varaha, 4.59g, Obv: Caparisoned Varaha- Boar standing facing right with Hale-kannada legend “Arasamu” below, within an elaborate Lotus-shaped border, Rev: Kannada legend in three lines – decorative scroll hanging down; below Hale-kannada legend in three lines “Shri (Ja)? Bhima / Ba(la?) Adi / tya” followed by a small lotus bud motif (Not published in major sources and unique so far). Very fine+, exceedingly rare and unique. The type and inscriptional pattern of the obverse of this rare coin compares closely with the ‘Nakara’ issues of the Kadambas of Hangal. It is therefore very likely a feudatory issue under the Chalukyas of Kalyani. The reverse legend ends in ‘-Aditya’ and rhymes with many Chalukyan titles. Allusion to ‘Bhima’ might suggest a connection to the feudatories in Northern Karnataka such as the Sindas, the Guttas or the Rattas.
