Jahangir, Silver Square Sawai Rupee (25% Heavy weight), 13.96g, ‘Shahenshah-e-Umūm' couplet, Lahore Mint, Ilahi month Isfandarmuz, AH 1019 /RY 5, Obv: Persian legend “Shahenshah-i-Umūm Shah Jahangir ibn Shah Akbar” [The Emperor of Nations, Shah Jahangir, son of Akbar Shah] with AH date, within a decorative mihrabi cartouche and heart-shaped arabesques in corners, Rev: Persian legend “Dar Isfandarmuz Ain Sikka zad dar Lahore bar Zar” [In Isfandarmuz the coin at Lahore struck on Gold] with RY date; within a decorative mihrabi cartouche and heart-shaped arabesques in corners. ex-mount, however neither legend or design harmed (Jahangir Liddle Type S-111, Zeno #120663, KM 160.2). Cleaned, very fine, extremely rare. The title Shahenshah-i Umūm is unique for this type of Sawai rupees, struck at Lahore. It testifies to the lofty ideals of Jahangir who saw himself not just as a king of his own domain but also as a ‘Universal monarch’, a concept close to the Indian ideal of ‘Chakravarti’.
