City State, Mahishmati, Ancient Central Malwa, Middle Narmada Valley, Die struck, Alloyed Copper, 9.67g, Uniface, Under type - Three-arched hill with crescent placed sideways, open cross to right, Brahmi legend “Mahismati” below a curved line, Over type - a composite mark of standing Goddess, three-arched chaitya with crescent, triangle headed standard, curled feline animal, two busts on a standard and traces of Brahmi legend (PAIC# 811). Counterstruck with a hitherto unpublished type. Extremely fine, extremely rare. This coin offers an internal chronology for two types of Mahishmati coinage - the more elaborate Goddess type is later than the simpler symbolic type.
