Phulgaon, Silver Rupee, 11.00g, “Ankushi” type, in the name of Shah Ali Gauhar struck at Phulgaon (M&W# T1). About extremely fine, extremely rare. Phulgaon, located on the Bheema River to the East of Pune, caught fancy of Bajirao II, the Maratha Peshwa in 1812and he decided to make it a pleasure resort. He encouraged several Brahmin families to settle there and ordered construction of mansions and markets. As a part of this urbanisation scheme a mint also appears to have been run at Phulgaon. The additional symbol is clearly of a Hibiscus flower which is associated with Ganesha – it creates a pun on the name of the mint-town and a reference to the Peshwa’s patron deity.
