Jahangir, Silver Rupee, 11.44g, “Firoz’ (Afruz)” Couplet, Ajmer Mint, AH 1023 /RY 9, Persian legend on both sides, Obv: “Ba-Ajmer Jahan Faruz Gasht Sikka-i Zar”, Rev: “Za Noor-i Nam Jahangir Shah Shah Akbar” (In Ajmer, the gold coin became world-resplendent, by the light of the name of king Jahangir (the son of) king Akbar) (KM# 149.5). Extremely fine+, exceedingly rare. Jahangir’s 9th regnal year commenced on 21 March 1614 (AH 1023) with the official Nowruz assembly taking place directly within the "pleasant regions of Ajmer". It was going to be a momentous year - Jahangir fell seriously ill during its course and his son Khurram won a decisive campaign against Rana Amar Singh of Mewar. Coins with a new couplet were struck - although collectors commonly name the couplet as ‘Firoz’, it is actually the word ‘Afruz’, which combined with ‘Jahan’ or World, means “World-resplendent”. The Ajmer coins with ‘Afruz’ couplet are struck in two varieties - the earlier issues have a two-division reverse with the word Sanah at the bottom, while the later issues have a three-division reverse. The coins with two-division reverse, like the one offered here, are much rarer than the later issues.
