Kakatiyas of Warangal, Anonymous, repousse fabric, Gold Punch Marked, Gadyana, 3.72g, 33 mm, Nine punches struck deeply on a very thin flan, a Boar facing right with sun and moon above in the centre, 2 x Kannada letter “Shri”, 4 x six-petal lotuses, 1 x Kannada legend “Koma” and 1 x Kannada legend “Lenka” on obverse. (Gold coins of the Kakatiyas, ACC No.12319, Dept of Arch & Musuems, AP). About uncirculated, exceedingly rare. The Kakatiyas emerged as independent rulers only around late 12th century. Prior to this, they ruled as feudatories of the Chalukyas of Kalyana. The word ‘Lenka Koma’ stands for faithful commander. The legends in the above coin have the characteristics of 12th century Telugu script and hence the coin thus belongs to Prola-II (1110-1158 CE) or Rudradeva (1158-1195) CE.
