Kakatiyas of Warangal, Prataparudra II, Copper, 9.31g, Obv: Devnagari legend “Shri Madhuka/ ra Kakatiya / Pratapa(rudra)”, Rev: Devnagari legend continuing from obverse “Deva Vi / jaya Kataka / 2 Anka”. Very fine for type, extremely rare. The copper coins of the last Kakatiya ruler Prataparudra II are very rare and were originally considered to be the issues of Gajapati king Prataparudra of Orissa, who ruled about 150 years later. But inscriptional data proved that the ‘Vijaya Kataka’ mentioned in the legend refers to the royal capital of the Kakatiyas and not Cuttack, the city in Orissa. Prataparudra’s copper coins were probably the earliest of the copper issues in the Deccan, closely followed by copious copper currency of the Bahamanis.
