Gangas of Gangavadi as Feudatories of the Chalukyas of Kalyani, Gold Gadyana, 4.08g, Obv: Lion standing facing right with paw raised, lamp stand to right, crescent above; clear traces of an under type, with lion facing to right with a lamp stand to left visible to left, Rev: Hale-kannada legend in three lines “Shri Shri / Ganga Ve? / Bala”, some letters distorted due to traces of an under type (Unique so far, Mitch# 201, plate specimen, K Ganesh ‘Karnataka’ 15.5, plate specimen). Very fine+, exceedingly rare and unique. The title ‘Gangave Bala’ could refer to the army of the Gangas as it literally means ‘strength of the Gangas’. The coin is evidently counterstruck on a different (earlier?) type. This might suggest a military conquest or a fiscal extraction, like payment of tribute. Whichever way, the coin offers an interesting insight into use of high value gold coins in medieval Karnakata. Mitchiner in MCSI attributes this coin to the Hoysalas; however, this identification is far from certain.
