Gangas of Talkadu /Feudatories, Gold 1/2 Gadyana, 1.99g, Uninscribed “Elephant” type, Obv: Elephant in profile, walking to right, with a royal umbrella above, Rev: A Makara (composite animal with crocodile snout, Elephant trunk, Fish tail and lion’s body), facing left in a dotted circle (Not listed in Mitch or Ganesh, scyphate shape). About uncirculated, exceedingly rare. It is almost impossible to attribute this coin to a specific ruler or dynasty but the representations it carries are interesting and unique. The Makara could well be a familiar architectural feature in Karnataka but it can also stand as the symbol of Pradyumna, a Vaishnava deity.
