Kadambas of Goa, attributed to Jayakeshi I, Gold Varaha- Gadyana, 4.29g, Obv: Composite animal made of lion with an Elephant trunk (Yali) facing left, Rev: Devnagari legend “Sri Malege Bhairava” with a Pashupata trident above, enclosed in a rayed circle (Mitch# 236, plate specimen, K Ganesh ‘Karnataka’ 6.7, plate specimen). Very fine, extremely rare. ‘Malege Bhairava’ or the Bhairava or ‘veritable destroyer of the hill countries’ was a title held by Jayakesi I and occurs on the seals accompanying his copper-plate charters. In many of his inscriptions a mention of ‘Bhairava gadynas’ is found and it will not be unreasonable to suggest that it is to be identified with coins with this title.
