Kadambas of Goa, Guhalladeva-III, in the name of ‘Tribhuvanamalla’, Gold Gadyana, 3.73g, Obv: Majestic roaring Lion with curled tail facing left, Elephant goad (Ankusha) symbol to left. Devnagari legend “Sri Tribhuvanamalla” in exergue, Rev: Pashupata Shaivite trident with Devnagari legend “Shri Malaha / ramari” in two lines (Not published in standard reference works, of high artistic standards). Unique coin in extremely fine, exceedingly rare. The first king of the Kadamba dynasty to hold the title ‘Tribhuvanamalla’ was Guhalladeva III, the son of Jayakeshi I, whose reign overlapped with the reign of Shashthadeva-II and Viravarmadeva. During his reign, sea trade with Arad lands prospered and the harbour of Gopaka (present-day Goa Velha) became the centre of a maritime superpower. However, many of his successors also called themselves ‘Tribhuvanamalla’. This coin is attributed to Guhalladeva III on the basis of the fact that it is of the ‘Malaharamari’ type which was chronologically an earlier type in the coinage of the Goa Kadambas. ‘Malaharamari’ refers to the Kadamba conquest of ‘hill regions’ lying across on the Deccan plateau.
