Gangas of Talkadu /Feudatories, Uninscribed, “Elephant” type, Gold Varaha- Gadyana, 3.89g, Obv: Elephant facing right, Lion in profile jumping above and floral scroll to right, Rev: Six symbols in two rows, below a crescent, separated by an ornamental divider chhatra, bhadrapitha, wheel, anticlockwise Swastika, kalasha and Shankha (Mitch# 194, plate specimen). Very fine+, exceedingly rare. Unique so far. The depiction of lion jumping over Elephant, known as Gajashardula, suggests royal power. Such motifs were adopted by feudatory rulers to indicate their own importance to the imperial power. The symbols on reverse broadly conform to the range of Jaina holy symbols or ‘Mangalas’. These are usually eight and it is possible that one each in the rows has gone out of visible flan on this coin.
