Ganga later branch, Anonymous, Punch Marked Gold Gadyana, 4.55g, repousse, Chalukya style temple punch at the centre with legends embedded in three tiers of the shikhara that reads “Sri Singhana Sangaha” and the Chalukya Lion symbol in the sanctum. Other 8 peripheral punches consistes of 4x Lion standing and facing right, 4x legend punches ‘Raja Kata’ on obverse. Extremely fine and extremely rare. Unique. The Gangas of Karnataka were called as Western Gangas to distinguish from the other contemporary dynasty that existed on the east which shared the same dynastical name. The Western Gangas were also known as Gangas of Talkaduu and Gangas of Talavanapura owing the name to their capital city. The Gangas had few branches, one of which ruled from Kuvalalapura (modern Kolar) and the other one from Mandali-1000 (modern Shimoga). The Gangas of Mandali-1000 ruled as feudatories to the Kalyani Chalukyas and later to the Hoysalas. The above coin shows Gangas’ allegiance to the Kalyani Chalukya dynasty. The legend punch signifies king’s name i.e., the King Kata. It could be attributed to Gangas of Manadli-1000 on this but detailed research is required.
